This stunning and rare Sea of Cortez pearl is mounted on a gold
enhancer fitment for versatility. The pearl measures 9.8mm by 13mm
and is smooth and lustrous with no visible surface flaws and only a
faint wrinkle across the top third of the pearl. In artificial light the pearl is smooth
silver grey but the lustre takes on a pink overtone in sunlight. The
pearl has been carefully set on a 14 ct gold enhancer fitting for
versatility. It can be worn as a stunning solitaire or as a drop to a
pearl or other necklace. Sea of Cortez pearls are extremely rare. After a long hiatus production only re-started at the turn of the millenium.
Perlas del Mar de Cortez is the only marine cultured pearl farm in the Western hemisphere. There are about 200 thousand Pteria sterna, a
pearl oyster known locally as "Concha Nácar", grown in a suspended
culture system. The farm produces only three to four kilos of pearls a year. Pearls are grafted at about two years old and harvested at four. This pearl is a first graft pearl. The nacre will be between .8 and 2.3mm thich. Pearls range from 8mm to 14mm.Only 5% of each year's harvest are pearls over 10mm The pearls are not treated in any way. After harvest they are simply washed in freshwater and gently patted dry. A unique feature of Cortez pearls is that they glow red under long ultraviolet lighting. This pearl comes to you direct from the pearl farm and you are welcome to check the provenance with
Perlas del Mar de Cortez.
