Volcanic Ash Friday 16 April, 2010
A quick note to pass on one surprising effect of the plume of volcanic ash which has been grounding planes - post may well be disrupted. More and more Royal Mail goes by plane these days and so at the moment it doesn't!
Postal Strikes Wednesday 21 October, 2009
Very briefly, Pearlescence is still here during the Royal Mail industrial Action. We have made arrangements for your pearls to be couriered to you by UPS and will only charge a special discount rate of £5 for the duration of the unrest (you opt for this as part of the check out process)

If you have a low value order during the strikes and do not want courier delivery then regretfully we cannot promise any delivery at all, although items will still be posted out quickly and by first class, as always. But the likelihood is that much will be lost and we cannot be held responsible for non-arrival at this time
Pearl Emergency Saturday 24 January, 2009
Every so often there comes in a PEARL EMERGENCY. Pearlescence is up to the task! We strap flashing blue lights to our heads and get on with it.

Today there has been such a situation -

9.30 Saturday. A call asking to commission a 28 inch large white pearl necklace. No problem at all except that it is to be a birthday present and the birthday is Monday and the recipient is 300 miles away.
By 9.45 the boss has taken the details of the order. Meanwhile knotter Mary, in working on Valentine's items, clears her workbench
9.50 to 10.35 Mary assembles as Wendy sorts the two strands into one necklace of the correct length, sometimes just a couple of pearls ahead of Mary's nimble fingers.
10.35 Wendy packs the necklace
10.45 Dash to the post office where Jan the postmistress does her excellent work and promises delivery by 1pm Monday.
Roman Earrings Monday 10 November, 2008
A stunning earring, dating from Roman Times has been found by an archeological team excavating in Jerusalem.

The single earring is thought to be at about  two thousand years old and is made of gold  set with pearls and cabochon emeralds. It was found in an archeological excavation being carried out in the David‘s City area next to the Jerusalem city walls.
-

The earring is fashioned from a gold loop with a large pearl set in its center. Two identical gold pendants are attached to the main loop, each set with a pearl and an emerald. The emerald is held in a gold cup-like setting which attaches it to the main loop with a small ring, also made of gold. A smaller pearl is attached to the other side of the emerald with a gold pin that passes through a hole drilled through the pearl.

According to Dr. Doron Ben-Ami and Yana Chronovitz, directors of the dig from the Antiquities Authority, ”the earring was preserved in an amazing condition and it looks like it was made yesterday.“ According to what is known about ancient jewelry, the earring, which was found in the excavation of a building from the Byzantine period (fourth to fifth century AD), was made earlier in the Roman period (first century BC to the beginning of the fourth century AD). Gold jewelry set with pearls and precious stones were in use throughout the Roman empire from the eastern provinces to Britain. Many pearls came from the UK, which was a rich source then

A First for Ancient Stones Friday 18 July, 2008

It was probably the first time the ancient stones of Stonehenge in south England have seen this: a pearl deal right in front of them.

Josh Humbert of Kamoka Pearl Farm was holidaying in England so he and Wendy met for a pearl related chat and Wendy of course has bought some Tahitian pearls.
They need to be made up (one strand necklace of round multicoloureds, two tin cups. and three pairs of round earrings is the plan) and then will be appearing on the website.
To many of you Tahitians are just an aspiration. These pearls truly are beautiful. The colours are deep and rich and the lustre is amazing. They feel somehow different to the touch to freshwater pearls.
