Gold and silversmith Anne Chisholm has just joined Pearlescence to expand our range of unique pearl and precious metal jewellery.
Anne has been working in gold and silver for about 35 years, and learned much of her craft from her late mother who was a gold and silversmith back in the days when this country was on the Gold Standard and you had to have a licence to buy gold at all.

TOOLS. We have added to the tools section with some useful bits of kit which are not generally available.
First up is a great jig for making earrings- we have had enormous fun with this, with everyone fighting over the sample thingy for their turn to make and find out a new variation.
By general consensus the favourite is the simple hook which fits directly into a half drilled pearl. Makes a comfortable, neat and stylish earring which doesn't jiggle around as much as a fishhook with a joint, the more conventional style.
Also new in are mandrel kits for making jump rings. Now we are forever running out of jump rings, and isn't always true that the size you want is the one which has run out while every other size is there by the 100s? Now it takes just a few minutes and a length of wire and there we are.
The kit instruction says to separate the spiral into rings with a flush cutter but we prefer and therefore recommend that you use a proper silversmithing saw for perfect jointing ends
We also have in some neat little wallets with every sort of pliers you could ever wish for, plus cutters, tweezers and scoopy thing. I wouldn't use these for everyday because they are small, but for carrying around to deal with a pearl emergency - perfect. They would make a great present too!

Things have been hectic here- busy but uneventful. The exciting news is that Pearlescence is going to start selling Beadsmith products, including tools such as the jig for making earrings which we have been happily playing with for over a month now (We always check stuff out before we stock it for resale to you)

This jig is great - we have made standard hook earrings as well as fixed ones - you can spot these on the website, where the earring fitting goes directly into a half drilled pearl.

It was thanks to Pearlescence's fabulous down-under pearl friend Nerida of Penelope's Pearls (www.Penelopespearls.com,au) that we discovered how great fixed drop earrings are and now we all wear them all the time.

The order is being finalised - new tools, the jog, other pearl stuff and some findings, so watch the website. The earring jig will free you up from having to keep wires in stock - all you need is some silver or gold etc 20gauge wire.

A quick note to pass on one surprising effect of the plume of volcanic ash which has been grounding planes - post may well be disrupted. More and more Royal Mail goes by plane these days and so at the moment it doesn't!
March 26 - New Silks Friday 26 March, 2010
You may have noticed some changes to the layout for all the silks we stock- this is because we have expanded the range and now we have both non-stretch and two needle cords
There are two sorts of non-stretch - the very silky and pliant High Performance, which I have tried out on some really big and heavy pearls without any stretch at all. High Perf knots up really nicely too and is smooth to the hands. You have to have something really sharp to cut it with though otherwise iit is easy to end up with a sort of frayed gnaw. The nylon cords are no-nonsense no stretch. Very very strong and no stretch. Good for strength and also good if you want to make a necklace you know is going to get wet - I'll use this for my annual anklets* in future.
The two needle lengths are brilliant when making a long rope.(and just to make clear because when I first came across this variation I thought there were somehow two needles at one end. D'oh...it is a needle at each end!)
Having a needle at each end of the length makes making a secret join a doddle. You just double through three pearls in the same way as when you start and finish.
It would, I suppose, be equally possible now I come to think about it, to make the rope  in two halves using two lengths of cord and you would still then have two needles to make a good join in the middle - but two needles makes it easy when you are making a rope which is a bit of a 'just keeping going until I get bored' sort of job.

*Every year I make myself a couple of ankles from some pearls which are lurking about, which I then wear all summer in a barefoot through the cornfield sort of way. They go on when I get out the Birkenstocks and come off when I go looking for Uggs.

Day two of the uploadathon. A quandry. I have designed a new pro-forma layout for the silks section, just after doing a modernisation of what was in that section, but retaining the old descriptions for each size and colour of silk.
Question - which do you prefer - the wordy paragraph or the info packed brief listing as shown in the new types of threads and the olive green silk entries.
Your comments much appreciated before I start to change alllllllll the silk entries...
