Every so often I have a mooch around eBay just to see prices and what is available in pearls and findings. I found a supplier of findings in this very town - prices are about double what we charge for ball clasps, and with an added £1.50 per item for postage!

Now I don't particularly like to snip at other sellers but I would like to make the point that we buy from makers direct from India or China rather than from importers. Which is why our prices are some of the best possible for you. Same with the pearls - where we even buy direct from the farms if we can (Kamoka Tahitians and Sea of Cortez) or from a freshwater supplier whose father is the pearl farmer.

This also means that we can very readily source stuff for you (although a request for triangular tahitians might occasion an exchange of emails with Josh...even that might be possible but finding the right nucleus and then waiting a couple of years for the pearl to be made ....do you really want a triangular Tahitian pearl...?)

To those of you who have ordered from us in the past few months and have sometimes had a delay in dispatch...thanks for your patience. It has been much appreciated. I have been away for much of the time as my son battled what was to be a terminal illness.

If you missed us for a couple of hours last night, apologies. There was a total power failure at the data centre at which Pearlescence is hosted. we were back live on the net at a bit after midnight. Also affected was Pearlescence's best friend website  www.discountmagic.co.-

can I just make clear to all that this pick a pearl nonsense is just flummery. The oyster is dead and the pearl has been bunged into it. It is a cheap oyster or any old mollusc and the whole thing is a tourist fluff to get you to pay big money for cheapo pearls. The molluscs are about $1 a pop from China
One example http://www.mauidivers.com/Experi-
ence-Pick-A-Pearl/

It happens all around the world. I hear of one set up where they dive off a pier and come up with an oyster for you, and some aquaria run this stuff too. There was one place in the UK where a punter was told that the dyed green pearl (! yes naturally occurring green dyed pearl!) was green because the oyster must be sick....

I think it is the hardest part about being a purveyor of pearls - getting the photos right.  We want every photo on the website to show the pearls accurately as to colour, shape and luster, while at the same time we want to maximise their appeal, to make them look as good as possible - consistent with that accuracy.
And at the same time to make the website look good we want a nice clean white background, so that it all looks seamless.
Try doing all that with white pearls. Finally we are getting there, but experimenting with different locations, lighting, a new camera and being tempted to stand on one's head to see if that helped, have all been intervals on the way, White pearls are still a bit tricky, but even those are getting there.
I have spent the last few days processing the latest photos and uploading them. Processing the photos does not involve much manipulation, just brightening the images to remedy the tendency of the camera to be daunted by too much white in the photo field. We don't over cook the images or spend hours and hours working with layers and layers in the photo. Often with darker pearls it is just a matter of a touch brighter and white fill the background.
Then the product specifications have to be written and uploaded - in english and in french as we are slowly translating the website into a second language.
So enjoy the new metallic lustered multicoloured pearls and the tahitian and south sea earrings and enhancers which have arrived and are soon to appear. We have made about 300 pairs of earrings in the last week too - the whole place still smells of glue!
Cheers

The metallics have arrived and are everything we expected. Spectacularly metallic lustre, round or very nearly round and wtih no marks. The colours range from white through t sort of gold pink with shades of gold from dark to light, peach and pink. Photos soon (check the home page which will show them once we get the photos done) We also have the pearls to make matched earrings.
They really are yum pearls!
